Ty Hendy praised for placing the people it supports at the heart of everything it does

February 21, 2018

Ty Hendy, our residential care home in Hendy, near Swansea, has been praised in its latest CSSIW report for placing the people it supports at the heart of the service.

Ty Hendy is registered to provide personal care and accommodation for up to 17 adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years who have learning disabilities, mental and/or complex mental health needs.

Inspectors who visited the service in January 2018 to undertake a full inspection found the people supported live in a home where they are happy, healthy and safe. They have a voice, have choice and as far as practicable control in making decisions about their lives.

They noted that it is a homely uplifting environment that is well maintained and that people supported at Ty Hendy receive high quality care and support from a service that sets high standards for itself, is committed to constant improvement and places them at the heart of the service.

Individuals supported told the inspectors they are provided with opportunities to make choices, be active and achieve fulfilled lives.

One said; “I love the staff, they are very good.” A health and social care professional told the inspectors “It’s a very good service, they know the individuals very well.”

Inspectors observed the team at Ty Hendy treated individuals with kindness and compassion in their day to day care and supported with patience and sensitivity.

One person invited the inspectors into their apartment. They told them “I enjoy living here” and were keen to share that they enjoyed undertaking a range of activities supported by the staff.

Our Manager Lorraine, has vast experience in supporting people with learning disabilities. When inspectors spoke with colleagues, one team member said “It’s a great place to work managers are very supportive.” and the deputy manager said “everything is about the residents, it’s their home. This was evident in all the interactions inspectors observed throughout their visit.

One health and social care professional told inspectors “It’s an excellent service, both management and staff are very good and know people well.” Inspectors agreed, noting that people are supported by a service that is fully committed in upholding its values.

Lorraine Jackson, our Service Manager was extremely pleased with the findings in the report and said: “At Consensus we want to ensure that individuals are always at the heart of everything we do. We are totally committed as a team to ensure we constantly improve and are delighted that inspectors recognised our passion and commitment to provide high quality care and support.”

Lorraine received praise for her commitment to her service when she was awarded for her leadership in residential care services at the Wales Care Awards back in 2016.

To find out about life at Ty Hendy the inspectors spoke with a number of individuals, relatives, health and social care professionals. They looked at care records, risk assessments and medicine administration records, safeguarding reports, incident records, complaints and compliments, policies and procedures.
