Providing Valuable Insight and Guidance On Transitions
This week Bernie Middlehurst, Referrals Manager for Consensus, provided an informative talk on key points parents might need to be aware of and consider when planning for their child’s transition from full time education.
The parent support worker from Wren Spinney Community School, in Kettering, invited Bernie to share his knowledge of the funding, accommodation and support options that are available to parents and individuals at key stages in their journey to adulthood.
The processes involved in navigating transitions from full time education through to further education, day support opportunities, volunteering and or paid employment can feel like quite an information minefield leaving many parents unsure of what options are available. This includes, when and how desired opportunities then change the funding options available to individuals.
Bernie touched upon finding access to funding, and accommodation options and how these can differ based on the needs and ages of each individual. He talked through the differences between residential care and supported living, explaining how these two options are funded by Local Authorities and through the benefits of an individual.
Bernie shared with the parents and individuals present, advice around creating a long list of options. As the time nears for decisions to be made, he suggested individuals and parent should visit as many of the options listed to create a shortlist that is both appropriate and offers the best opportunities for each individual.
Followed by a drop in session where more specific advice could be given to those who requested it the evening was valued by all those who attended. Feedback from some parents already since the evening has been very positive with Bernie’s advice raising some interesting points that had not previously been considered.
