Knitting the house together
The Links knitting group started about six months ago with two individuals Michael and Peter and support colleague Vicky who had learnt to knit by watching Michael.
As knitting squares was their strength they decided that together they would produce a blanket made with lots of individual coloured squares.
Seated in a quiet space, Peter learnt to knit just doing a couple of stitches at a time, then progressed to completing a whole row before putting his knitting down. His determination in learning to knit earnt Peter a monthly achievement award at their monthly house meeting.
Once all the different coloured squares were complete a number of other supported individuals enjoyed sewing them together for the group in their spare time between their own activities.
The Links Day Centre in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, provides a warm and homely environment for adults with learning disabilities within the local area to enjoy a full range of lifestyle activities and learning opportunities based on their preferences.
The fully trained, committed team respect the choices and dignity of every individual they support. Through creative and forward thinking they build a programme of person centred support which ensures these choices are put into practice and lead to positive outcomes.
