Joining the local Bowls Club gives John his own time
Bowls had interested John for quite some time, so his support team sourced a local bowls club for him in December 2016, which he could join and enjoy some time of his own.
The bowls club runs every Saturday morning between 9am-12pm, so John’s one to one hours have been tailored to this. At John’s request he has a member of the support team there with him. John felt very shy the first few times he went and asked colleagues to join in with him, but now as the weeks go by John’s confidence has grown and although John still has his one to one support with him, he now goes off and is confident enough to play with the rest of the bowls group. John took the lead with his support and it was his choice to have a colleague there with him. Although John no longer feels the need to have his support colleague playing, he is more comfortable knowing that there is someone there to support him if needed.
John gained his membership to the bowls club in January 2017 and this covers him for the year and in different weather conditions. John is very happy to be an official member of the bowls team. He has been invited to other bowls sessions throughout the week, tournaments and other bowls events which are helping to improve his confidence and widen his social circle. These were some of the things he had wished to gain from this experience. John has taken his role as part of a bowls member very seriously by making sure he has the right footwear and clothing and is now looking to purchase some balls of his own.
John says; ‘I love going to bowls and having my own time and would like to thank the staff who take me every week’- John.
