Dr Margaret Wilson’s Recent Trip to Northern Romania

July 25, 2012

Consensus’ Autism Consultant and Specialist, Dr Margaret Wilson recently completed her 10th trip to a “special school” in Pietra Neamt, Northern Romania.

“Dr Mags” has been visiting the school for the last 5 years taking 2 trips per year to assess new children, enabling her to develop individualised education plans to support them in fostering greater levels of independence.

The school is funded by a, Essex based charity called “Haven in Romania”. The work undertaken by the charity and supported by Dr Mags is groundbreaking in a country that still attaches a stigma to Autism, regarding it a social stigma through a lack of understanding.

The children at the centre are largely supported by their mothers as many of the father’s simply disappear.

Dr Mag’s incredible contribution has assisted 4 children to progress into “mainstream” schools, with a further 2 moving this September the centre and the school have now developed positive links and support one another in progressing the children. Progression to a mainstream school is unheard of in Romania where Autism continues to be regarded as a disease, only treatable by drugs.
