Rebecca's story

Rebecca is 26-years old and has a learning disability with additional complex needs. She has been living in Consensus accommodation for nearly three years. When she first moved to The Pines she had very little confidence.

Rebecca lives independently in a separate part of our setting. She attends to all of her personal care herself apart from washing her hair for which she will occasionally ask for assistance. Rebecca is very capable of managing daily life skills and has grown in confidence with the support of Consensus staff, to the extent Rebecca is able to self medicate without any intervention.

Rebecca enjoys going into town during her spare time to visit her favourite social clubs where she meets up with other service users from within the community. Rebecca has no problem with social interaction as she is a very friendly person who has developed a large circle of friends. Rebecca attends all of these activities via public transport which she accesses independently.

Rebecca now attends a work placement every Tuesday, which she thoroughly enjoys. This involves travelling on two separate buses, in the morning and the afternoon, which Rebecca has no problem doing. Recently, Rebecca started a second work placement at a country park where she is involved in a new scheme that is being trialled, weighing and packing vegetables ready for sale.

Rebecca has always talked about moving into the community and this has now been made possible with the help of the Consensus. A placement has been found for Rebecca living in a house with other females. Although this house is still supported it will give her a lot more independence and she will be closer to the town, her work placements, and her recreational activities. This step out into the community has made Rebecca very excited and she is looking forward to her new life.
