Ty Hendy in Carmarthenshire is Consensus’ unique specialist Learning Disability and Dementia service in South Wales.

As a leading national provider of specialist support and accommodation for people with a learning disability and complex needs, Consensus was well placed to contribute positively towards filling the service deficit for people with learning disabilities and a form of dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Society suggests that the risks of somebody with a learning disability developing dementia are three to four times higher than the general population.

Supporting People with a Learning Disability and Dementia

Ty Hendy is an innovative service at the forefront of developing best practice. Through the implementation of best practice design principles and ideas developed by the Iris Murdock Centre at internationally renowned Stirling University, Ty Hendy provides an environment that aids orientation and supports individuals towards greater levels of independence.

Ty Hendy was established in 2011 and has been successful in creating a resource where the environment and staff skills are entirely focused on delivering outcome focused, person-centered support for people with a learning disability and dementia.

Ty Hendy employs a highly skilled support team who are experienced at supporting individuals who have a learning disability and a form of dementia. The competent team have gained a great deal of understanding and experience in supporting a wide range of impairments characteristic of dementia. The service also receives input from our Dementia Care Champion.

The combination of this specialist environment and support team makes Ty Hendy a unique service that supports individuals to achieve maximum levels of independence and provides opportunities for high levels of engagement both within the service and neighbouring community. Ty Hendy was also nominated for a Pinders Healthcare Design Award in 2011.

Ty Hendy in an outstanding innovative service located in two acres of beautiful landscaped gardens offering a unique blend of services all on one site:

A Specialist Dementia Service- A modern self-contained service with eight en-suite bedrooms, each with state of the art, specifically designed dementia facilities including direct-dial telephones, memory boxes, open fronted furniture and sensor operated bathroom lights.

Individual Accomodation- Independence is promoted in each of the five self-contained well appointed flats. Each has a large lounge/bedroom area, a well equipped kitchen, direct dial telephone and internet access.

A Respite Facility- Offering short term support for up to four individuals at a time, large en-suite bedrooms are combined with spacious well appointed communal areas.

Ty Hendy offers a dedicated activities room and various lounges. Individuals are encouraged to pursue their own hobbies and interests. Evening therapies are offered, such as yoga, aromatherapy, music therapy and reflexology through qualified practitioners. People using the service enjoy a variety of activities such as garden games, discos, karaoke, indoor games, BBQ’s, cinema visits and swimming.
