Development Stories
Mike Ranson, Development Manager for the Eastern Region has recently completed the development of a new service, 1 Walton Road, Clacton, Essex. 1 Walton Road is a small residential service providing support to adults with learning disabilities and behaviours that challenge.
1 Walton Road has been designed to accommodate people in a variety of individually styled bedrooms and bed-sit style flats each constructed to a high specification and fitted out in accordance with the specific needs identified for the client group.
The service provides a number of communal areas allowing the engagement in both social and occupational activities. A high level of core staffing will enable the management of the environment and maintenance of boundaries identified within individuals support plans designed to minimise conflict and the occurrence of challenging behaviour. The staffing compliment can be varied to suit the individual’s needs and the expectations of commissioners in order to provide Best Value.
The service is aimed at providing a social model of care to people who perhaps may have been supported in health service provision or in services which have not provided opportunities to be part of the wider community. A focus of the scheme is therefore the development of social skills and opportunities to expand their life experiences. The service is likely to provide long term placements and not necessarily be geared to prepare people for living in tenancies however; this possibility will be regularly reviewed, where appropriate.
