Making a difference

A new autism specific supported living development.

One example of the added value that the Consensus Positive Behaviour Team provides is a Consensus service that supports people with autistic spectrum conditions in Essex.

At the outset of the project the team gave a presentation to Essex Social Services on the Applied Behaviour Approach, and worked in conjunction with Consensus’ Operations and Developments teams to identify the key needs of people in the area.

Subsequently our Behavioural Practitioners worked closely with the Domiciliary Care Manager to jointly assess each of the referrals and their individual needs. This partnership characterises how we work at Consensus and enabled us to design a service that would support individual needs ranging from 24 hour support to more independent living.

Prior to the move itself their specialist knowledge contributed to each of the individual person-centred care plans, providing a smooth transition and a positive start in the new service. Since the service opened, the team has also been on hand to provide continued advice on activity timetables, symbolic communication, managing challenges and staff development and monitoring.

As a result of the fantastic support provided by service staff and the Positive Behaviour Team, a number of the individuals at the service have gone on to live in their own homes.
